Cities are increasingly demanding more food and every year on earth the arable areas in the countryside are reduced either due to desertification, drought, adverse weather, deforestation, aquifer drainage, pollution…
For this reason, according to the United Nations, in 2050, our planet will support a population of 10 Billion inhabitants, of which 80% will live in large cities, which is why we face an uncertain future and major food supply problems…
Many countries have already started with aid plans for companies that want to contribute to a change or modernization of the way of cultivating and, one of them is controlled indoor cultivation.
This business model is based on the growth of foods in high demand such as lettuce, tomatoes, herbs, sprouts or any type of food with high nutritional value and fast growth, for supply in cities.
It is usually carried out in industrial buildings or in premises that are no longer used, but in central areas of cities so that their distribution is very efficient and conserves the highest percentage of nutrients from when they are cut and packed to the consumer’s table.
These crops are usually carried out in a controlled environment, also with LED technology due to its low consumption compared to other technologies and high PAR performance as well as versatility, since in reduced spaces you have to have flat devices that produce the minimum heat to save on room air conditioning.
As long as indoor cultivation is not vertical, you can count on our represented luminaires to cover the maximum area in the most efficient way possible.
The SunRay lines from Grow-Spec can be a very good solution as well as the luminaires of the Zeus line from Lumatek. By not having sunlight like a greenhouse, they will not produce shade and will produce optimal light for each type of crop that the client wants to cover.
In this type of cultivation we can distinguish 2 types of lighting:
- Espectro completo (Full Spectrum): Generalmente compuesto por LED blanco de espectro completo de 400 a 700nm con picos de refuerzo en rojo (660nm) y azul (450nm) para una mejor eficiencia de la fotosíntesis incidiendo en las clorofilas A/B.
- Espectro rojo/azul (450-660nm): Compuestos por LED de potencia en longitudes de onda concretas, por lo general en 450nm (azul) y 660nm (rojo), donde están los picos de absorción de la clorofila A y B respectivamente.
Depending on the objectives of the company and the form of production, one spectrum or another can be chosen so that the cultivation is as efficient as possible.
In this type of indoor crops, renewable energies such as solar panels are also often used, so LED technology allows them to be connected directly from the solar panels to the luminaires through a transformer at the voltage that the luminaires are programmed to operate (24/48/72v).
Lately, large indoor growing projects are done in the subsoil due to the fact that the conservation of temperature and humidity is more constant than on the surface, so the cost of air conditioning is very low. London is a clear example of the expansion of this type of crop.
